This species of wood no longer exists in the forests of North America. All material used for flooring must come from structures built before the Chestnut blight hit this country in the early 20th century. This being the case, flooring will often have a larger amount of character than any other material.

Common character marks consist of more nailholes (and larger in some cases), excessive wormhole and checking, major color differences from one board to the next, dark patina from weathered barn-siding, etc. Some of the material may be fairly clear, being resawn from a large beam. Typically, this is not the case and millwork will retain a very rustic appearance.

American Chestnut is a beautiful wood with color like no other and carries with it stories told in centuries past.
